Traditional healers have largely been unrecognized within western publications regarding neglected tropical diseases. A new article recently published by the International Journal for Equity in Health, explored the role of traditional healers for mycetoma management in Sudan. The article found that traditional healers were often the first point of contact for those who had mycetoma. Interestingly, medical pluralism, where participants utilize both traditional and biomedical healers, seem to be commonly used by the Sudanese population. Traditional healers provide a way to integrate spiritual interventions, community and ritual mediation for a holistic approach to recovery.

The authors highlight the need for a biosocial approach rather than strictly adopting the tradition biomedical approach seen in studies. What do you think of this article and do you agree that the incorporation of traditional healers in management plans would help induce behavior change within certain populations?
