November 17th, 2022-Knowledge Exchange Café

iCHORDS will be hosting a Knowledge Exchange Café on Thursday, November 17th, 2022 from 10:00 – 11:00 am (EST).

In three African countries, in 2020 to 2022, a multi-country study on FGS carried out formative research, trained drama groups to raise awareness for FGS screening; conducted FGS screening for 6 to 8 weeks and developed a FGS manual for drama groups. The presentation will present: the study team and design;  formative research findings; the intervention (drama, FGS screening and evaluation); the screening uptake and diagnostic results; FGS stigma data; and the FGS manual for drama groups.

Speaker and Bios

Virginia (Ginny) Bond is a social anthropologist who is Professor of Anthropology and Public Health Policy at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine based overseas at Zambart, School of Public Health, University of Zambia.  Since 1991, she has worked in Zambia and elsewhere in the sub-Saharan African region. Her areas of interest include health related stigma and social science components of community randomized trials, mainly focusing on Tuberculosis and HIV. This study was her first time to work on FGS, with other members of the team providing the FGS expertise.  She is the lead PI on the study, ably supported by co-PIs in Tanzania and Malawi, namely Dr Humphrey Mazigo and Dr Khumbo Kalua, and by social science study managers.

About Knowledge Exchange Café:

The Knowledge Exchange Café is a monthly event which will bring together individuals to network and learn from one another’s research and experience. The emphasis in these discussions will be on the social and behavioural sciences as they relate to Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) and how they help reach the WHO 2030 NTD Roadmap goals. Each Knowledge Exchange Café will include time for networking and conversation to facilitate interaction amongst attendees.

iCHORDS (Improving Community Health Outcomes through Research, Dialogue and Systems Strengthening) Community of Practice is a platform for communication, collaboration and knowledge exchange within social and behavioural science research disciplines to address implementation gaps and current issues facing Neglected Tropical Disease programs.
