July 13th, 2023–Knowledge Exchange Café

Join us on July 13th from 10:00-11:00am EST to learn about Morbidity Management and Disability Prevention in Lymphatic Filariasis. Watch the recording here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UBgD_rEFTw

Session topic:

With lymphatic filariasis (LF), Morbidity Management and Disability Prevention (MMDP) is focused on patient care. Being one of the arms of GPELF, there should be 100% geographical coverage of MMDP which includes the essential package of care (EPC). EPC includes treatment of acute adenolymphangitis, lymphedema management, surgery for hydrocele and treatment of any remaining infection. For this approach to be effective, the patients, family members, friends, volunteers, and health care workers all must be trained on hygiene practices. Training of family members, friends and community improves the acceptance by the patients to the point where they form their own self help groups, and helps to reduce stigma.

In this study we are looking at how “community” can be used to spread the message of EPC to reduce stigma and end the neglect.

Speaker:

Professor Suma Krishnasastry is the director of the Filariasis Research Centre, the WHO collaborating center for LF MMDP. Prof. Krishnasastry completed her medical training at the Government Medical College in India. She is now a Professor of Medicine in the Government TD Medical College in India, and has been actively involved in research on lymphatic filariasis for over three decades with the WHO/TDR. She has a specific interest in morbidity management and disability prevention in LF endemic countries.

About our Knowledge Exchange Cafés:

The Knowledge Exchange Café is a monthly event which will bring together individuals to network and learn from one another’s research and experience. The emphasis in these discussions will be on the social and behavioural sciences as they relate to Neglected Tropical Diseases and how they help reach the WHO 2030 NTD Roadmap goals. Each Knowledge Exchange Café will include time for networking and conversation to facilitate interaction amongst attendees.

About iCHORDS:
