Rising to the challenge: Operational Research Results and Recommendations for NTD Programs in the COVID-19 Context

On April 1st, 2020, the WHO recommended that community-based surveys, active case-finding activities and mass treatment campaigns for neglected tropical diseases be postponed until further notice due to the risk
of transmitting COVID-19. As NTD programs began planning for the restart of activities in the months that followed, a need was recognized for operational research to assess the effectiveness of MDA campaigns and community surveys that had been adapted for the COVID-19 context and provide rapid results and recommendations that could be shared with the NTD community.

This session will highlight the results of several operational research studies that have taken place over the past year in a variety of settings. The studies consisted of a range of activities including direct observation of CDD adherence to COVID mitigation guidelines during MDA; assessment of community perceptions and willingness to take part in MDA and surveys during the pandemic; analysis of increased costs brought about by COVID restrictions; exploration of CDD experiences and wellbeing; and investigation of adaptation, integration, and innovation used to ensure programs could resume during the pandemic.

This session will take place on 25 August from 14:00 – 16:00 BST.
